The 390 is a 290 with doubled VRAM and the 290 was a rebranded 7xxx series card.
If you are not going to be using FCPX go with the nVidia GPU and use the nVidia web drivers.
\SUCCESS!Hackintosh build with AMD Radeon R9 390 (self.hackintosh)
submitted 7 月前 * by timonvs
I got a 4K monitor last week and I noticed that my MacBook Pro (2014 w/ GT750m) is sometimes struggling with the resolution (especially with Chrome, I need Chrome for web development).
I want to build a Hackintosh with a AMD R9 390 GPU since this GPU beats the GTX970 and sometimes even the GTX980 with 4K gaming.
Unfortunately I can't find a lot of information about the compatibility with the R9 390 and OSX. In this subreddit there are two posts about it that both say that El Capitan natively supports the R9 390. Is installing Hackintosh with El Capitan feasible?
Full list of parts of my planned build:
Type Item
CPU Intel Core i5-4460 Boxed
Motherboard Gigabyte GA-Z97M-D3H
Graphics card MSI Radeon R9 390 8GB Gaming
Memory Crucial Ballistix Tactical BLT2CP8G3D1869DT1TX0
SSD 2x Crucial BX100 250GB
Power supply Seasonic M12II Evo 750W
Case Cooler Master Silencio 352
UPDATE: NVIDIA has announced drivers for El Capitan. That's when I decided tot get a GTX 980 because I wanted the least trouble.
I have to say, setting up Hackintosh with Clover was easier than expected. Also I got a GTX 980 because I read that retina scaling didn't work properly with AMD cards (because Apple uses older drivers? And the 290 and 390 are basically rebranded 7000 cards).

Still waiting for confirmation before pulling the trigger. I really want the 390 over the 970. It's far superior.
I watch every forum post every day for someone to report feedback.
I'd recommend finding a computer store with no restocking fee on parts and taking a gamble.
I'd assume they function the exact same as the 290/290x
The 390x seems like its far less trouble free than the 390 in terms of frame buffer issues.

Can you elaborate on why the 390x would be less trouble? I do have the budget to buy the x version, but the performance seems to only be marginally better (~5%) than the standard 390.

Something to do with the frame buffer personalities work better with the X version(all outputs working, no flickering). People on the forums have reported the 290x to be 100% working pretty much out of the box. 290s tend to have more troubles to fix flickering and multiple displays.

Well I have the R9 390 and it works great with 10.10.5. Just had to edit AMD8000 and AMDx4000 and add 0x67B11002. A only one port worked DVI.. yet sleep then plug in other and both monitors work. It is a tad slower then Nvidia 970 (in os x).. but I dont game in os x. In Windows.. 390 is faster then my 970 g1
Stuck with EL Capitan.. it sees the card as 290 8096.. just like in safe mode.. but I dont use or need EL so..

Can you elaborate on this? I have a 390 I'm trying to get working and I understand changing the device ID, but what is AMD8000 and AMDx4000 and where can I find it?

I don't doubt that it does work, but I'd wait til it's further tested before purchasing.

I need it next week, so I can't wait much longer.

https://www.reddit.com/r/hackintosh/comments/3bx617/r9_390_for_hackintosh/csqibtu It's probably going to work, but with such an expensive gpu, make sure that you can either return it if it doesn't work or you're willing to use Windows/linux. Pretty sure it will work though.

That's one of the posts I saw. But the OP hasn't responded if the build works, so I can't know for sure.

Let me know what you finally end up going with for a GPU in the end, im currently on the fence about everything. the 970 is the last resort in the end as its the weakest card on the table for me.

Hey I'm looking into the 390 as well.
Have you learned anything new since this original post?
Thanks!

Sorry to disappoint you. I bought the GTX 980 after NVIDIA released drivers for El Capitan.
What I do have to say is that installing Hackintosh was easier than expected, so you'll probably get it to work. If you have multiple monitors you want to connect, get the 390X, because a lot of people are having problems with some ports on the 390. I'd also advise you to use Display Port since that seems to give the least trouble.
Good luck!

Thanks!
I'm actually thinking I'm going to get the 980 as well. Sounds like you would recommend it?
I was also looking at the 390x - reports are that it's working fine for hackintosh?

The 980 is working great for me. From what I can tell the drivers for the 200 and 300 cards from AMD are using drivers from the 7000 series. So I don't know if they would be as good as the NVIDIA drivers. I really needed the performance for my 4K monitor.
But the 390X should indeed work fine, but the 390X is also
